Rules and Ethics
We know, we know, rules and ethics are boring. But don't worry, this isn't a long, tedious, and kill joy list like the Geneva convention. This is here to prevent something much worse than war crimes: more Ricky Gervais stand-up specials.
Rules
1) Don't joke about it unless you are it
The best comedy comes from your own observations and your own lived experiences. So why joke about someone else's?
To ensure we respect everyone, please focus on discussing your own identity. You know what you would find funny or offensive about your own life, and this is personal and subjective, so please don't assume you can speak about a different group.
2) No Triggering Content
Dark comedy on traumatic topics does have its place and can be done tastefully, but also has lots of risks. Therefore, please avoid these topics as much as possible. If you do want to include one, please keep it minimal, not graphic, thoughtful of other victims, and only consider things you have personally experienced (like Rule 1).
Triggering topics include: suicide, rape, mental health, eating disorders, verbal and physical abuse, and murder. This is not a complete list, so please think of the consequences of any other theme you may use.
3) Be an activist, Not a Narcissist
We are firstly an activist group, secondly a comedy group. While we do aim to support ameteur creators by giving you a platform to share your art, stories, and videos, we are also a community aiming to use queer comedy to destigmitise and devalue hate speech and provide a comforting respite to others. Therefore, please focus on what your message is, and how it might reflect a shared experience, rather than being a narcissist who wants to advertise themselves and their abilities.
4) Speak with the community, not for the community
Both activism and comedy are not about making yourself the figurehead of opinions. Therefore, please do not state your ideology as fact, or proliferate stereotypes about queer people. Any jokes that could be interpreted as queerphobic must be overt so people know it is included for sarcastic humour. Be considerate and mindful of the diverse experiences within groups and identities.
5) Have a Queer Theme
We are a queer group, so all content must have a main theme which reflects queer experiences. Obviously, comedy works great with tangents, so not every joke has to be queer, just the over-arching idea and message.
6) Be You
This means two things. Firstly, don't plagerise. But secondly, be your own creative self. Aside from the rules of saftey, comedy doesn't have any set rules. If you think its funny, someone else will probably find it funny. Plus, this is an ameteur group, so don't think you need prior experience or strive for perfection. Just experiment and have fun.
Ethics
1) You can be anonymous
Being visable online is not a viable option for many people, so please use a pseudonym. This applies to everyone as full names are prohibited for saftey. However, a first name can be included if you desire.
Please also consider if you want your voice, face, or personal information present in your pieces (especially for video-based formats). Do not share information that could identify you, such as your location or specific details about yourself and others in your stories.
There is also an option to be marked as "anon" only.
2) We can not guarantee protection from harm
Due to this being public, anyone will be able to view your pieces. This can include people with differing opinions (or to put it less lightly: queerphobes), who may retaliate through hate speech. We will do our best to reduce this through filters and banning, but this will not be instant or 100% effective.
Also, if you do share personal details (such as your name, voice, face, or location) then there is a chance people who know you in real life can find you, or there is a chance you will be doxxed. Please consider the consequences of being public online, and choose how anonymous you want to be in regards to these risks. We can not accept liability for queerphobia experienced as a result.
3) You have a right to withdraw at any time
If you change your mind about being featured, you can request to have any piece removed at any time. We can archive or delete any posts, and remove any contact details and consented back-ups on our cloud storage. Please be aware, this will not be instant, as we are a small team and this is dependent on when a modderator is available. However, withdrawals will always be our priority. Please also chase us up if you have noticed your request is yet to be fulfilled.
